NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is optimistic the league will find a way to resume the 2019-20 season and said canceling the campaign outright is "not something I'm even contemplating," according to Curtis Pashelka of the Mercury News.

Appearing in a virtual town hall with San Jose Sharks business members on Tuesday, Bettman expressed confidence that a champion will ultimately be crowned this season.

 

"I believe that if the right time comes, and the right circumstances, based on all of the options that we're considering and our ability to execute them, we'll get this season done," Bettman said. "I don't want to sound Pollyanna, but canceling is too easy a solution. That means you stop working hard to do all of the things that we're doing, and I ultimately believe that there will be an opportunity."

The NHL halted play on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Players and staff are still in self-quarantine, but the league hopes to initiate Phase 2 of its return plan by late May.

"States are reopening, cities are reopening," Bettman said. "And if we do the right things, I think we'll be able to finish the season."

Though details are still unclear, the NHL is reportedly leaning toward jumping straight into the playoffs upon return.

Reported playoff proposals include a 24-team tournament featuring the top 12 clubs in each conference, as well as the traditional 16-team format.

Multiple players, including superstars Connor McDavid and Marc-Andre Fleury, said in late March the league shouldn't immediately begin the postseason, citing rust and player safety. The NHL has since said teams will hold training camps to help players get back into game shape before returning.

There have only been two instances in NHL history in which the Stanley Cup was not awarded - during the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1919, and the lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.

The Seahawks and Cleveland Browns spoke about a Russell Wilson trade in 2018 that would have sent the first overall pick that year to Seattle, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.

The discussions took place a year before the Seahawks signed Wilson to a record four-year, $140-million extension. Contract negotiations between Wilson and the Seahawks appeared to grow contentious in advance of the quarterback's self-imposed deadline.

The trade chatter apparently motivated Wilson to successfully angle for a no-trade clause in his new deal.

 

Wilson, a perennial MVP candidate, had led Seattle to the playoffs five times in six years when the talks with Cleveland occurred. He's since added two more postseason trips to his resume.

The Browns selected Baker Mayfield first overall in 2018, a draft that had four additional quarterbacks - including 2019 MVP Lamar Jackson - chosen in Round 1.

Two NFL players -- including a 2019 1st round draft pick -- have been accused of armed robbery and arrest warrants have been issued, TMZ Sports has learned.

 

Law enforcement confirms NY Giants cornerback Deandre Baker (the 30th overall pick in 2019) is facing 4 charges of armed robbery and 4 charges of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Seattle Seahawks corner Quinton Dunbar is facing 4 counts of armed robbery.

NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill reports the Saints signed RB Ty Montgomery.

The Saints will be Montgomery's fourth team since 2018. He showed plenty of promise as a RB/WR hybrid during his first 3.5 seasons with the Packers, but the 27-year-old back has struggled to find consistent playing time with the Ravens and Jets. Coach Sean Payton obviously has a weak spot for players that can play multiple positions, but it's hard to see Montgomery seeing more than a handful of touches per game inside of this loaded offense.

The NFL released a plan for teams to reopen their facilities May 19. Several stipulations are involved, but if certain conditions are met and the respective teams’ states are not under any lockdown measures, select personnel may return to clubs’ facilities, the league announced.

 

One of the stipulations: players and coaches remain barred from team facilities. The NFL released a memo earlier this week extending the virtual offseason through the end of May. This latest memo indicates teams’ front office staffers, medical personnel and select others can report as soon as Tuesday.
