Cox: Six reasons why it’s difficult to predict how Rangnick will do at Manchester United

When The Athletic broke the news a week ago that Ralf Rangnick was to be Manchester United’s next manager, there was almost widespread acclaim for the appointment.

Gone was United’s fixation with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the club’s traditions. Instead, they would be led by a highly-revered figure who’ll set about modernising the club.

Much like when it comes to player recruitment, talented coaches succeed when they have a clearly defined role.

At United, off the pitch as well as on it, the club’s structure has been chaotic and largely unsuccessful. The hope is that Rangnick can be, midway through 2021-22, what Bruno Fernandes was for them midway through 2019-20 — parachuted into the club and handed a free role to do as he pleases, with everything based around him.

But Rangnick is not a Pep Guardiola, a Jurgen Klopp or an Antonio Conte — ready-made coaches for big clubs based upon their successes elsewhere. In fact, Rangnick’s new job at Old Trafford is arguably different from anything we’ve witnessed before. That makes his performance very difficult to predict, in various ways.

First, United have appointed a man who has only actually managed a team for two of the last 10 seasons.

It’s difficult to think of a precedent for such a significant gap on the CV of a new appointment to the dugout. We know that Rangnick has almost constantly been involved in football, but it’s nevertheless still difficult for anyone to be sure precisely how good a coach he is in 2021, given just two seasons in management in the past decade.

Of course, those two campaigns — in two stints — were at the same club, RB Leipzig, one of which came when they were still only in the German second division. Both should be considered successful seasons, although Leipzig were on an upward curve anyway — partly because of Rangnick’s work upstairs. But how good a coach is he in an entirely different environment, without his preferred wider structure in place? Ultimately, there’s not much frame of reference here.

Second, Rangnick has not managed a club like Manchester United before.

Granted, he’s experienced two short stints at Schalke, a large club in terms of fanbase, but his major successes have come with Hoffenheim and then Leipzig, where he guided unfashionable small clubs to promotion. Various other managers have succeeded at a certain level before finding a superclub an entirely different animal. There are bigger egos, footballers who are already fully-formed in their tactical identity, and highly successful, big-earning global stars who have won everything. It is, clearly, a different challenge.

Third, Rangnick is coming in as a mere interim manager but appears to have been tasked with overhauling the side’s identity.

This, again, seems highly unusual. Usually, a manager with a grand philosophy talks about a long-term project. Even Jose Mourinho, considered a relatively short-term manager, regularly claims that his sides excel in his second season — after they’ve successfully learnt all his concepts.

Generally, interim managers are tasked with keeping things steady. They are often walking into a fragmented dressing room, and are appointed because of their reputation for getting big players onside, keeping the tactics relatively simple and creating some level of stability. From that perspective, Rangnick’s appointment seems like the opposite in almost every manner.

Fourth, Rangnick is an interim manager who will also advise on the identity of his successor.

Again, it’s difficult to find a precedent here. Appointing a manager is arguably the biggest decision for any club; it’s the responsibility of the owners and, if there is one, the director of football. While they will make the ultimate call on United’s next permanent manager, it’s nevertheless remarkable that the decision might be — even partly — influenced by someone who wasn’t involved at the club a fortnight ago, and who will be coaching the team in the meantime.

That said, if anyone is suited to the task, considering his experience switching between being a coach and a director of football, it’s Rangnick. But appointing someone specifically to be a short-term figure while also depending upon their expertise for the long term is highly unusual, and speaks volumes about United’s lack of planning.

Fifth, it remains to be seen whether Rangnick can step away from coaching the side, while also maintaining some sort of role at United. There were reports that he didn’t manage this transition smoothly at Leipzig, where he named Ralph Hasenhuttl as coach but developed a reputation as a backseat driver from his sporting director position, then appointed himself as Hasenhuttl’s successor for 2018-19 while he waited for Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann to become available.

What if Rangnick does what Thomas Tuchel did after joining Chelsea last January and transforms United overnight? To what extent will he happily step aside next summer while they appoint the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag or — curiously rumoured this week — Roberto Mancini?

Sixth, and finally, it’s not entirely clear what Rangnick’s “consultancy” role at Old Trafford will entail.

That word is enormously open to interpretation. It could mean Rangnick is extremely pivotal, as a director of football in everything but name, who is given the freedom to overhaul the club from top to bottom.

Alternatively, it could be a very minor role, and Rangnick will simply be available to pick up the phone and provide advice — and that this two-year consultancy was arranged because, financially, Rangnick wouldn’t want to leave a job he only started at Lokomotiv Moscow this July for a mere six-month contract in Manchester.

That remains a question mark, as does a lot about the whole situation.

Rangnick is clearly an outstanding figure to have around your club. His footballing intelligence, particularly in having a clear vision for a club’s identity, is superior to that of Solskjaer and we should expect a major improvement imminently considering the quality of the squad.

United are 10th in the Premier League table but Rangnick should steer the side into the top four.

He has never before walked into a club like United, though, and perhaps no other manager has ever walked into an interim job with such lofty expectations in terms of transforming the club.

If he succeeds, it will be more than his bosses deserve.

Kakšen je kot človek nimam pojma, par izjav v teh treh tekmah je bilo čudnih, če se misli dokazat je čas da si dobi svoj Derby County in vidi kje je. 

 

Tbh bi mi bilo čudno, če bi ga Ragnick obdržal (čeprav je izjava, da je to Carrickova odločitev), ker bi bilo to čist preveč starega staffa.

Ne vem, če je res, a Rangnick naj bi imel v pogodbi klavzulo, da dobi dodatnih 10m, če mu uspe prepričat Haalanda za prihod v United. Glede na to, da ga je pred leti on pripeljal v Salzburg ima zveze z njim in Raiolo, a mislim, da bosta na koncu sprejela finančno najboljšo ponudbo. Po drugi strani pa če se United ne uvrsti v CL verjetno avtomatsko odpade z njegovega seznama.

Pa tudi če pridejo v CL, kot igralec ne bi imel pojma v kaj se spušča, ker bo nov trener, v zadnjih letih pa so imeli dost high-profile flopov.

Valda je bla to očitna buča. Če bi mel to klavzulo kjerkoli, bi bila napisana tako, da noben nebi zvedel zanjo, kaj šele preden je človek stopil na angleška tla.

Drugače sem pa pogledal tiskovko, kot pričakovano ve kaj govori in ve kaj misli narest iz ekipe, bomo videli kakšna bo izvedba. V prvi fazi omenja kontrolo nad igro in skozi to manj prejetih golov kot prvi quickfix, ki se ga pač da narest v naslednjih 2-3 tednih.

Jao Evra, glede na izjavo je meltdown že tle.   Se strinjam, da je res bolje ko je bil Ole in je mela igra pravi United DNA. 

 

Za večino Unitedovih legend velja, da bi bilo bolje za vse skupaj, če bi bili tiho. Da ti Neville lapa je že vsakdanje, Keane je sicer carski za poslušat ampak je dobesedno buldožer ki ruši vse pred sabo s svojimi besedami, Scholes je tbh kar realen, ampak tudi direkten in rušilen, zdej še Evra... vse to v dobi socialnih omrežij in 23 letnikov na igrišču, ne more bit lih prijetno poslušat bivše legende, kako te dissajo svoje naslednike 24-7, tudi če zasluženo. 

 

Je pa United click machine, če sklepam že samo po Youtube ogledih - pizda za vsak dogodek sledi ene 5 oddaj na različnih postajah, povsod komentirajo različne legende, posnetki imajo v par urah po par 100k ogledov... ni čudno, da tok molzejo.

Poglej. Meni končno izgleda kot nekdo, ki ve kaj hoče in zahteva da se ga posluša. 

gledam. moraš pa vedet, da sem od grande joseja gledal skoraj vsak presser in od van gaala tudi  sta znala še bolj z besedami. medtem ko od oleta praktično nisem gledal nobenega tako je bil prazen, pa je vendarle ravno on prinesu nazaj neki naše igre. ako ti sploh priznavaš da obstaja man U way   

evraju in rageu ni za zamerit, enostavno je neki treba mlatit, ker se tako nestrpno čaka karkoli konkretnega. jaz bom takole reku, kot sem omenu v edinem komentarju že zadnjič: modelu ni izključen predčasni sack. namreč tu je izjavil, da dogovor ima 6 mesecev in potem konzultacijsko vlogo, usnjeni sedež, da pa sam razmišlja da bi dalj lahko bil manager ... rewind ... nekateri ste ga tu že ustoličili v upravo 100%. ta izjava je na lastno roko od njega, mogoče je tudi kdo od naših si rekel ha?

jaz ne bom rekel nič, odprl pa si je fronto, kjer nekje marca ob čudni igri lahko začnemo govorit sack Rangnick. ne želim potem slišat, da se bo itak preselil še pa v upravo, a sedaj je zajebal kot manager. če si želi vodit klub 2-3+ leta BMK, samo bodmo realni, ne se mi zaljubit v švabota če ne bo spoštoval man Uja

smo morali čakat na nemškega managerja da smo nazaj začeli igrat (verzijo) 4-4-facking-2 

me zanima koliko rigorozno se namerava držati tega 4222 sistem, ker na papirju se z našim kadrom lepo sklada (celo za pogbaja je tam mesto), vprašanje pa kako se bi to dejansko odneslo proti boljšim ekipam (oz ekipi ki ima pol sposobno levo krilo in/ali vezo)

...samo je res zanimivo, kako se ti trenerski stili in nogometne šole menjajo skozi obdobja.

 

od nizozemskega pristopa konec 90ih, do vseevropskega kopiranja francoske šole v začetku milenija, do španskega totalnega fuzbala vol 2., do zdajšnje nemške trenerske falange, ki je v igro vnesla nove elemente...

 

kar naenkrat se ti v 10 letih pojavi 4-5 trenerjev iz iste države, ki jih začne kopirat praktično pol Evrope...

PA Martial 99% zapušča klub januarja. Dobra poteza imo, me zanima kok bodo iztržili. Na papirju dober, v praksi meni osebno katastrofalen igralec za EPL, lahko pa da pride v neko sredino kjer se bo počutil dobro in nakuca par fantastičnih golov za hajlajce.

Trener Brentforda je predlagal da se odpove celotno naslednje kolo plus tekme Liga pokala da se ekipe sestavijo in da bi se normalno odigrale tekme čez Božič / novo leto.
