For Mr Obama's political opponents, including his Republican challenger Mitt Romney, the household survey data offers something to work with. The unemployment rate ticked up from 8.2% to 8.3% in July—statistically unchanged but enough for politicians to claim things are headed in the wrong direction.

A new NerdWallet study found the 10 most profitable U.S. companies paid an average of 9% in federal taxes last year. These low rates are particularly shocking given that the official tax rate is 35%. The study also revealed more than half of the 500 largest U.S. companies paid a lower tax rate than the average American.

Europe looks to open up Greenland for natural resources extraction

Objavljena slika

Melting of icy surface opens up possibility of extracting rare earth metals and gemstones, but many fear it could destroy the Arctic

Europe is looking to open a new frontier in the ever more urgent quest for new natural resources – the pristine icy wastes of Greenland.

Oil and gas have been the focus of exploitation so far – but the EU sees just as much potential in a massive opening up of mining operations across the world's biggest island, according to Antonio Tajani, the European commission's vice-president and one of the most powerful politicians in the union. He called the move "raw material diplomacy".

Latest satellite data reveal that 97% of the surface of the Greenland ice sheet underwent surface melting over four exceptionally warm days in July, indicating natural resources will become more available for extraction in the coming decades.

The potential gold rush is being welcomed by some in Greenland, but has raised fears of environmental damage, pollution and despoliation across the Arctic that could destroy one of the world's last wildernesses.

Tajani said: "Greenland is hugely important in terms of natural resources, it has vast opportunities. We are currently working very hard with the prime minister of Greenland on this – we are working on our own agreement with Greenland on raw materials."

He said: "This is raw material diplomacy. We have allies working on this worldwide."

Greenland's government is keen to exploit the island's natural wealth in order to alleviate some of the serious poverty and social problems that blight the indigenous population.

Henrik Stendal, of the Greenland government's mineral extraction department, told the Guardian: "The government would like to have another source of income – currently there is just fishing, and a little from tourism, so this is a big opportunity for us. These explorations can be done sensitively, we believe."

Only one company is currently operating a productive mine in Greenland, producing gold. But at least five are in the advanced stages of setting up new mines, and more than 120 sites are being explored. Greenland is thought to contain vast mineral wealth, including rare earth metals, gemstones and iron ore.

As competition from developing world pushes up price of energy, metals, minerals and other raw materials, finding new sources of supply is at a premium – putting densely populated Europe at a disadvantage, with little opportunity to expand its oil and gas supplies or mining operations.

But Greenland – with strong historical ties to the EU through Denmark, though the island now has home rule – represents a vast and largely untapped resource. Drilling for oil in Greenland's waters is now at the exploratory stage, having been impractical until recent advances in deep sea drilling. Mining has also been all but impossible across most of the country, which is covered in a 150m thick sheet of ice except for a few coastal strips, but melting ice and new techniques are likely to bring more of the region's potential mineral resources within reach in the coming years.

But Europe may face competition. China is already ahead; one of the most advanced metals mining projects in Greenland is nominally owned by London Mining, a UK company, but most of the finance and direction comes from China. Other countries are also eyeing the prize – although Greenland's historical ties are mainly with Europe, it is geographically close to the US and Canada.

Tajani's aggressive push into the Arctic puts him on a potential collision course with Greenpeace, the global environmental pressure group. Greenpeace recently opened up a new campaign focusing on the threats to the Arctic – one of the last places on earth where the industrial revolution and exploitation of natural resources have yet to penetrate. As part of the campaign they closed 74 UK Shell petrol stations in protest at the company's moves to drill for oil in the Arctic.

But in a nod to environmental concerns, Tajani also insisted Europe must seek to use its resources better, wasting less and recycling more, where possible. "We want better resource efficiency. One of the uses of the economic crisis is that it has become more important for companies to show competitiveness by being more efficient with resources, and of course for a green economy this is also a top priority," he said.

The reuse of resources would also be key, he said. "Recycling is very important, we need to do more recycling in Europe. At present, we ship a lot of waste to China but why not do more of it in Europe - if we send abroad, we have all the side costs associated, but if do it here we develop another industry that is very important for raw materials for industry," he said.

A recycling industry could also be a source of exports. "If we do this efficiently, we can export technology to other countries that need to be regulated properly," he said.

Jon Burgwald, an Arctic expert at Greenpeace, said that mining operations can bring pollution and destruction: "There could be some very harsh environmental consequences."

Mikkel Myrup, chair of the Greenlandic environmental campaigning group Akavaq, said that dealing with waste and "tailings" from the mines would be a key concern, as well as handling the toxic chemicals that are used in some forms of mining. "Mining does not have the same risks as oil drilling, but mining can be very hazardous to the environment. It's a real worry, and we don't think that the Greenlandic government has the capabilities to regulate this in the way that's needed – they can't stand up to these multinational companies. The public haven't been given the full picture," he said from his office in Nuuk, Greenland's only town of any size, with 15,000 inhabitants.

Burgwald also warned of the potential social consequences. "What happens when you have scores of Chinese workers living next to a small town of indigenous people?"

Greenpeace has already succeeded in delaying attempts by Cairn Energy to establish oil and gas drilling operations in the Arctic seas. Activists have more such protests in their sights. Burgwald said that if there was damage or prospective damage from mines in Greenland, they too would attract similar actions. "We would certainly oppose it if it wasn't being done right."

He did not rule out mining in Greenland altogether, if done in a sustainable manner, but said that current plans were unclear and Greenland's government would need substantial help in order to set up the right standards that would avoid the dangerous consequences. There was little sign of such help being forthcoming yet, he said.

Ne pove prav veliko ampak je popularna tema: Lessons from Sweden in Assembling a Recovery

Zelo dobra analiza tekočega stanja in potencialnih rešitev: Can global growth be saved?

Navedek

To sum up, we have the following propositions.
1.) The US needs to engage in infrastructure spending. Although easily conceived, practically impossible to implement considering the political players involved.
2.) The BRICs are no longer the source of massive global growth. While a lowering of interest rates in each region would help to mitigate the overall slown all the countries are experiencing, the basic model of growth in these countries is fundamentally changing. China is changing to a consumer led economic model, which is lowering its demand for commodities, thereby lowering the growth rate of other BRICs. More intractable problems in Russia, India and Brazil further hinder the possibility of a return to rapid growth.
3.) The EU has serious structural problems that need to be overcome. While their integration has come too far to be undone, the continent may lack the overall political will to meaningfully solve their problems in the short or medium term.

Put another way, muddling growth is probably here to stay for awhile.

Še ena super analiza: Five years on, the Great Recession is turning into a life sentence

Navedek

The GINI coefficient of income inequality went through the roof, as it did in the late 1920s. It is a formula for asset bubbles.

Yet the `Austrian School’ is surely right as well to argue that a rise in debt ratios across the rich world from 167pc of GDP to 314pc in just thirty years was bound to end badly. A study by Stephen Cecchetti at the Bank for International Settlements concludes that debt turns “bad” at roughly 85pc of GDP for public debt, 85pc for household debt, and 90pc corporate debt. If all three break the limit together, the system loses its shock absorbers.

There is too much saving and too little consumption in the world to keep growth, and people in jobs. It is the 1930s disease. On this the Keynesians are right.

Much of the debt will have to be written off. Whether this done by inflation (1945-1952) or default (1930-1934) will be the great political battle of this decade. Pick your side. Pick your history.

1. Banke povečajo količino denarja v obtoku s tem da dajejo kredite in ustvarjajo 'virtualen' denar.
2. Centralna banka namensko pošilja nove količine denarja v sistem. Kolikor sem razumel iz prejšnjih postov na osnovi neke teoretične ocene dodane vrednosti novih izdelkov in storitev.

Učimo se iz zgodovine: A message from the 1970s on state spending

Navedek

"We used to think you could spend your way out of recession and increase employment by boosting government spending,” boomed the Prime Minister, Jim Callaghan, at the 1976 Labour Party conference.“I tell you, in all candour,” he went on, “that that option no longer exists. And in so far as it ever did exist, it only worked on each occasion… by injecting a bigger dose of inflation into the economy, followed by a higher level of unemployment as the next step…”

The above words are among the most important uttered in the history of modern British politics. For a left-wing prime minister to have admitted that too much state spending is dangerous, while being barracked by a rabble of bearded Trotskyists from among his own party ranks, marked a turning-point in Western economic policymaking.
For it was in 1976 that the UK government had been rescued by the International Monetary Fund. After years of industrial subsidies, soft-budget constraints and Keynesian hubris, Britain was insolvent – unable to service its debts. After months of denial, the markets forced Callaghan’s government, “cap in hand”, to seek an IMF bail-out.

Calling for “growth” isn’t difficult. Taking on the banking lobby, though, requires serious knowledge and the courage to face down powerful vested interests. What a tragedy it is that the Western world seems to lack the political leaders, or even the intellectuals, with the necessary guts.

Koliko je to res? Dobil po emailu:

Koliko časa je Holland predsednik Francije? Dobra dva meseca. Naši še vedno govorijo o Grčiji in Španiji, Francija in Islandija sta TABU!

ves prepoten!

Ukinil je vladne in državne časopise /ala Demokracija, Reporter/,
revije, fundacije in časopisne hiše.
