Pro bike racing teams tend to be pretty protective of their rider data, but Jumbo-Visma has shared Primoz Roglic’s power numbers from several stages of the Tour de France with Dutch outlet AD, shedding some light on the data behind the battle for yellow at this year’s race.

Included in the data shared with AD were Roglic’s numbers from the all-important stage 20 time trial, which saw him relinquish the yellow jersey to his compatriot Tadej Pogacar.

As AD reports, Roglic averaged 369 watts over the course of the individual time trial to the tune of 5.7 watts per kilogram over 57 minutes and 41 seconds. Those numbers represent an improvement over Roglic’s ride in the stage 10 time trial at last year’s Vuelta a España, which he won while putting in 5.4 w/kg over 47:05, going 1:29 faster than Pogacar that day.

Specifically on the Planche des Belles Filles portion of his ride on the 20th stage of this year’s Tour, Roglic put out 388 watts over 15:31 for 6.05 w/kg. For a two-minute period towards the end of the climb his output dipped to 334 watts.

Although those are impressive numbers by any estimate, they were only good enough for fifth on the day. The final climb was not his best performance over a similar time span at the Tour. That said, at least according to AD, Roglic “has never ridden” the numbers that would have been necessary to hold off Pogacar’s surge into yellow.

AD’s report also included Roglic’s numbers for other big days in the race. On stage 8, for instance, Roglic rode at 369 watts for 5.7 w/kg on the Port de Bales for 33:42, and then followed that up with a climb up the Peyresourde at 389 watts (6 w/kg) for 24:25.

The next day, he put in one of the most impressive rides of his Tour. On stage 9, he rode at 371 watts (5.8 w/kg) for 3:45 on the Col de la Hourcère climb, then upped his output to 395 watts (6.1 w/kg) for 24:34 on the Col de Marie Blanque, with an especially strong final four kilometers doing 416 watts (6.4 w/kg) for 14:48.

On stage 17, the only day in the race that saw Roglic drop Pogacar and put significant time into him on a climb, Roglic rode the Col de la Madeleine at 338 watts (5.2 w/kg) for 59:15 and then the Col de la Loze at 356 watts (5.5 w/kg) for 1:01:08.

Although he rode the Plateau de Glières the next day at 386 watts (6 w/kg) for 21:08, Roglic would not significantly outmatch Pogacar that day or, decisively, two days later, when the younger Slovenian would take over the race lead for good.

:D:avadodo:
