Mariners president Kevin Mather resigns

Seattle Mariners president Kevin Mather resigned on Monday after a video surfaced of him speaking critically about the organization earlier this month.

Speaking to a rotary group in the video, Mather talked about the Mariners organization, commenting on a former player's need for a translator, other players' poor English and the team's decision to not call up more prospects, alluding to service-time manipulation.

"There was no chance you were going to see these young players at T-Mobile Park," Mather said. "We weren’t going to put them on the 40-man roster, we weren’t going to start the service-time clock."

Mather had been with the team since 1996 and was named team president in 2014.

"His comments were inappropriate and do not represent our organization's feelings about our players, staff and fans," Mariners chairman and managing partner John Stanton said in a statement. "There is no excuse for what was said, and I won't try to make one. I offer my sincere apology on behalf of the club and my partners to our players and fans. We must be, and do, better."

Mather apologized Sunday night for his "terrible lapse in judgment."

"There is no excuse for my behavior," Mather said in a statement. "My comments were my own. They do not reflect the views and strategy of the Mariners baseball leadership."

Mather had previously come under scrutiny after being accused by women of inappropriate workplace conduct. The allegations led to financial settlements, according to a Seattle Times investigation in 2018.

The MLB Players Association released a statement Monday calling the video "offensive."

"The club's video presentation is a highly disturbing yet critically important window into how players are genuinely viewed by management," the MLBPA said. "Not just because of what was said, but also because it represents an unfiltered look into club thinking.

"It is offensive, and it is not surprising that fans and others around the game are offended as well. Players remain committed to confronting these issues at the bargaining table and elsewhere."

The big picture

Corey Brock, Mariners beat writer: The comments Mather made in a Feb. 5 Zoom call with a rotary group — video that went viral on Sunday — certainly raised plenty of eyebrows. Mather touched on topics such a service-time manipulation, questioning if former pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma needed an interpreter and saying that top prospect, outfielder Julio Rodriguez's "English is not tremendous." He called one player "overpaid."

 

No, this isn't a good look for a franchise — two decades removed from its last playoff berth — that's trying to rehabilitate its reputation through a rebuild. In a 46-minute video, Mather did a lot of damage.

 

The significance of Mather's comments on service time

Brock: Service-time manipulation is one of baseball's worst-kept secret: keeping players from reaching the major leagues in order to gain more club control later on. Just about everyone does it, though no one ever admits to doing so. Mather did in the aforementioned video, and you can probably bet that he or the Mariners will get calls Monday from the Major League Baseball Players Association and the league, if they haven't already happened.

 

What's next

Brock: On Monday, Mather submitted his resignation as president and CEO of the team, the Mariners announced in a statement. Chairman and managing partner John Stanton will serve as the acting CEO and president "until a successor can be chosen." Now comes the hard part: Cleaning up this mess. "We have a lot of work to do to make amends, and that work is already underway," Stanton said.

Definitvno je upgrade, se mi pa vseeno da so kar precej dali zanj.

Hja, so tudi "plačali" za to, da so Lionsi prevzeli Goffovo pogodbo, drugače se bi ga težko znebili.

Koncno se je premagalo hawkse! Pa svechnikov na prvi NHL tekmi letos takoj gol. 100% ga bo zdej nazaj vrgu v Griffine  Bernier se je spet mogu postavt na glavo za zmago, k obramba je se zmeri zanic. Sam 2 zaporedni zmagi so tle, tko da se ne bom dost prtozavu
