MLB 2022 season preview: 10 storylines to watch

Here we go, 30 different reality shows, taking place over the next six months in ballparks across North America. The steady rhythm of a season, the daily drama surrounding each club, is part of baseball’s magic. This is my 36th season covering the sport, and my anticipation for Opening Day is still the same. I can’t wait to see everything unfold.

This year, I’m putting a slightly different twist on my annual top 10 storylines column, writing specifically about the 10 things I am most curious about. I could have taken a darker approach and written the 10 things I am least curious about — your fantasy team, Rob Manfred’s golf game, the Orioles’ latest trade for a competitive-balance pick. But hey, it’s a new year, and I’m attempting to turn over a new leaf.

The 2022 season opens with a particular air of mystery. Spring training was abbreviated. Transactions continue to come in waves. The new collective-bargaining agreement will create different narratives and strategies for players and teams. But in the end, baseball is still baseball, and we’re getting the full 162 games, thank goodness.

Here’s what’s on my mind. As always, feel free to share what’s on yours.

Health and injuries

An executive from one club said he is “terrified” by the number of injuries that might occur in April, saying, “We’re not close to being ready to play.” An athletic trainer from another club fears a wave of physical issues arising during the first six weeks of the regular season. Virtually everyone in the sport shares similar concerns, all because the protracted collective-bargaining negotiations left the sport with 3 1/2 weeks of spring training instead of the usual six.

The league tried to react accordingly by expanding rosters from 26 to 28 until May 2, with no restriction on the number of pitchers teams can carry, as opposed to the new limit of 13 when rosters return to their normal size. The Dodgers plan to include 16 pitchers — 16! — on their Opening Day roster, in part because they are beginning the season at hitter-friendly Coors Field. The Yankees, though, also will be at 16, and a number of other clubs will be at 15.

Some executives believe that pitching staffs overall still will not be conditioned well enough by the time the 13-man maximum takes effect on May 2, potentially creating a second wave of issues. The league at the moment is not planning to change its timeline, though it’s conceivable that complaints by enough teams could prompt an adjustment.

If not for the owners’ 99-day lockout, which included a prohibition on teams talking to players, this entire conversation could have been avoided. Without direct club supervision, one athletic trainer said, some players might not have worked hard enough during the lockout. Others, especially pitchers, might have done too much.

The expected increase in the rate of injuries early in the season will be one more consequence of the lockout. Damage the players, damage the on-field product, damage the sport.

Jake, Max, Buck and Co.

Look at the bright side, which for Mets fans often is difficult to do. Once Jacob deGrom returns from a stress fracture in his right scapula, his extended time off should theoretically enable him to pitch every fifth day through October, assuming he stays healthy and the Mets reach the postseason. Max Scherzer’s right hamstring tightness appears much less of a concern, “a hiccup” as he called it. He is likely to start the second game of the season.

The respective healths of deGrom and Scherzer are critical for the Mets to succeed in 2022, but with Steve Cohen’s money first-year general manager Billy Eppler has assembled a position-player roster with Dodgers-like depth. New additions Starling MarteMark Canha and Eduardo Escobar turned holdovers J.D. Davis and Dom Smith into bench players, and it’s reasonable to expect the Cleveland version of Francisco Lindor to emerge in his second year in New York (and the first year of his 10-year contract).

The Mets’ starting pitching, even after a trade for Chris Bassitt, gets dicier without deGrom, but FanGraphs rates their bullpen the fourth-best in the NL, behind the BrewersBraves and Dodgers. Finally, the team should benefit greatly from the hiring of Buck Showalter as manager, from the way he runs a game to the stability he offers the clubhouse.

Ask Showalter’s former players. Some recall him as occasionally irritating. But nearly every one views him as a great manager.

Dueling Carlos Correa glove triangles

Two questions here. The first is whether the Yankees and Astros will regret not winning the bidding for Correa. The second is how Correa will fare this season in comparison to the other star-caliber shortstops who could potentially join him in next winter’s free-agent market, most notably Trea Turner and Xander Bogaerts.

These are the known facts:

The Astros made their last and best offer to Correa — five years, $160 million — in November. The Twins gained the financial flexibility to sign Correa by trading third baseman Josh Donaldson, shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Yankees. The Astros are high on Jeremy Peña as Correa’s replacement, and the Yankees are excited about the futures of shortstop prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza.

Now we’ll see how this multi-layered soap opera plays out — and whether Correa was wise to accept a three-year, $105.3 million free-agent deal from the Twins with opt-out clauses after the first and second years of the contracts.

Correa, 27, reportedly had long-term interest from the Tigers and Rangers as well as the Astros before the owners’ lockout. He then switched agents, moving from Jon Rosen of WME to Scott Boras, but after the lockout ended he was unable to land the $350 million contract he was thought to desire.

Such a deal remains possible if Correa has a big year with the Twins and returns to the market at 28; he is a year younger than Turner and two years younger than Bogaerts, who also is represented by Boras but might not stay at shortstop. Then again, if Correa gets hurt or underperforms, he might need to delay opting out until the 2023-24 offseason, when he would be 29 and less of a candidate for, say, a 10-year deal.

Correa gambled, as did, in their own way, the Yankees and Astros. It’s doubtful all will be proven right.

Freddie Freeman vs. Matt Olson

Hoo boy, this will be good. The debate about Freeman’s departure from the Braves is over, and now the question comes down to pure baseball.

A full evaluation will not be possible until four things occur:

• Freeman completes his six-year, $162 million contract with the Dodgers.
• Olson finishes his eight-year, $168 million extension with the Braves.
• The outcome of the Braves’ 2022 season is determined (the team used some of its savings in the first year of Olson’s deal to acquire other players).
• The careers of the four prospects the A’s acquired for Olson are properly assessed.

That’s a lot to wait on, but rest assured the immediate comparison in performances between Freeman, 32, and Olson, 28, will still be fascinating. The Steamer projection system rates Freeman slightly above Olson for 2022. But considering the difference in their ages, how long can Freeman be expected to hold an edge, if indeed he holds an edge at all?

The Braves insisted publicly throughout the negotiating process that they wanted to keep Freeman. I’ll take them at their word, but I don’t think they minded the final outcome, even though it cost them players who are now four of the A’s top 19 prospects, according to MLBPipeline.com: catcher Shea Langeliers (No. 2), center fielder Cristian Pache (No. 4) and pitchers Ryan Cusick (No. 9) and Joey Estes (No. 19).

The boxscores will tell the story, in 2022 and beyond.

The hype surrounding the Blue Jays

Earlier in the spring, I wrote that one rival official was not convinced the Blue Jays were much-improved over 2021, reasoning that it will be difficult for Matt Chapman to perform better than Marcus Semien, and for Kevin Gausman and Yusei Kikuchi to perform better than Robbie Ray and Steven Matz.

It’s a reasonable point. But a scout assigned to the Jays, Mets, Yankees and Phillies this spring said he liked the Jays the best of those clubs, calling them the most complete and most fun to watch.

The 2022 Jays have a healthy George Springer, as opposed to the one who appeared in less than half their games last season. They have Alek Manoah, promoted for his major-league debut last May 27, and José Berríos, acquired at the trade deadline, from the start of the season. And they will be playing all of their home games in Toronto after spending more than half of ’21 in Dunedin and Buffalo.

In the opinion of the scout, Chapman’s defensive excellence at third will protect against Bo Bichette being only an average defender at short, while Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio could form a solid platoon at second. The outfield of Springer, Teoscar Hernández and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. might be one of the best in the game, and the newly acquired Raimel Tapia gives manager Charlie Montoyo a viable left-handed hitting alternative.

One more thing the scout likes: The Jays take pride in making contact. Only the Astros had a lower strikeout rate among the 30 major-league clubs last season.

Lack of respect for the Giants

In late August of last season, I made a bet with an evaluator about the Giants. The evaluator, citing the Phillies’ late-season collapses in 2018 and ’19 under manager Gabe Kapler, predicted the Giants would be under .500 in September. I said, “bet you dinner,” and when the Giants went 23-7 after Sept. 1, I began gleefully investigating menus at restaurants where I might collect.

Why am I sharing all this? Because too many people (and projections) underestimated Kapler and the Giants last season, right to the end. As if on cue, it’s happening again, in what will be Year One of the post-Buster Posey era.

FanGraphs projects the Giants to finish 85-77, third in the NL West behind the Dodgers and the Padres and fourth in an NL wild-card race in which only three teams will qualify. Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA system is even harsher on the Giants, predicting them to go 78-84. So yes, one year after the Giants won 107 games, two of the game’s leading projection models predict they will miss the expanded playoffs entirely.

Such an outcome certainly is possible, particularly for a team that features a number of key contributors in their mid-30s. Already the Giants are beset by injuries — third baseman Evan Longoria (right index finger) and outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. (left knee) will open the season on the injured list, while first baseman Brandon Belt (right knee) did not make his spring debut until Saturday.

The Giants, though, are excited by their starting pitching. Carlos Rodón and Alex Cobb replaced Kevin Gausman and Johnny Cueto through free agency, and Cobb’s velocity spike into the mid-90s was the talk of camp. Few heads of baseball operations are better at 40-man roster construction than Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. Discount the Giants at your own risk.

The Angels’ latest bid to contend

I covered this particular topic in a recent column entitled, “Why I like the Angels to make the postseason this year — sort of.” In that column, both manager Joe Maddon and right-hander Noah Syndergaard praised second-year GM Perry Minasian for his aggressive approach, with Syndergaard saying the first thing he noticed when the Angels recruited him as a free agent was “the fire and intensity from Perry.”

On Saturday, Minasian was at it again, taking a nearly $28 million hit by designating for assignment veteran outfielder Justin Upton, a player signed by the Angels’ previous GM, Billy Eppler. Both Andrew McCutchen and Marcus Stroman criticized the move on Twitter. But by moving on from Upton, 34, Minasian wanted to create playing time for two younger outfielders, Brandon Marsh, 24, and Jo Adell, 22.

The overall message, as Syndergaard indelicately summarized it, is that the Angels are “sick of this s—,” specifically their inability to make the playoffs the past seven seasons and failure to win a postseason game since 2009. Minasian’s style alone will accomplish nothing. But he backed it up with substance, signing Syndergaard and Michael Lorenzen to deepen his rotation and committing $92.75 million to improving the team’s bullpen.

Health will be critical for the Angels, just as it is for any fringe contender. Their middle infield is a concern. The starting pitching after Shohei Ohtani needs to be better than people expect. But at the very least, the vibe around this team is intriguing.

The AL Rookie of the Year race

In recent years, the most talented rookie classes were in the NL. Pete AlonsoMike SorokaFernando Tatis Jr. and Bryan Reynolds were the top finishers in the rookie balloting in 2019. Ronald Acuña Jr.Juan Soto and Walker Buehler went 1-2-3 in ’18. Corey Seager, Trea Turner, Kenta Maeda and Trevor Story were the top four in ’16.

This season, the AL competition looks deeper, a potential showdown between the No. 1 overall pick in 2020, Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson, and the top two picks in ’19, Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman and Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Oh, and don’t forget Tigers outfielder Riley Greene, the fifth overall choice in ’19; Rays right-hander Shane Baz, the 12th overall selection in ’17; and Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez, who was a bargain at $1.75 million out of the Dominican Republic during the 2017-18 international signing period.

Rutschman, slowed by a right triceps strain, and Greene, out 6 to 8 weeks with a fractured right foot, will start the season at a disadvantage. Torkelson, Witt and Rodríguez made Opening Day rosters, perhaps benefiting from a new wrinkle in the new collective-bargaining agreement that discourages service-time manipulation.

Eureka! Teams that promote players in time to receive a full year of service could qualify for an additional pick in the amateur draft and, if an international draft is agreed upon, two picks in that process as well, with a maximum of one pick per year.

In the NL, Cubs right fielder Seiya Suzuki need not worry about service-time manipulation after signing a five-year, $85 million contract. The shortened spring will increase the difficulty of Suzuki’s adjustment to the majors, but he seems poised for a strong Rookie of the Year run.

Suzuki, 27, won his second Japanese batting title and hit a career-high 38 home runs last season, showing an ability to handle velocity that should bode well for him in the majors.

Which team(s) will surprise?

It happens every season. One or more teams defies the “experts” and emerges seemingly out of nowhere, contending in at least the early part of the season. If geniuses like myself knew who that team would be, it would ruin the surprise. But here are three guesses for clubs that might make everyone look silly if things break right.

Tigers
Projected wins by FanGraphs: 75

Perhaps the most advanced of the rebuilding teams, the Tigers turned a corner last season after AJ Hinch took over as manager, going 68-61 after May 7 and producing their highest winning percentage since 2016. General manager Al Avila’s trade for Austin Meadows on Monday night provided further evidence that the team is ready to take the next step.

For the Tigers to contend for a wild-card spot, they will need their young starting pitchers to keep making progress, with Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal looming as potential game-changers. They will need shortstop Javier Báez, signed to a six-year, $140 million free-agent contract, to emerge as an offensive force. And they will need their young position players to contribute — Torkelson and center fielder Akil Baddoo early, Greene after he returns.

Royals
Projected wins by FanGraphs: 75

For all the talk of Witt’s potential impact, the Royals’ chances of improvement hinge almost entirely on their young starting pitchers, who last season had mixed results. The Royals endured an 11-game losing streak in May and a 4-21 stretch in June in large part because they lacked a stopper in their rotation. The signing of free-agent right-hander Zack Greinke should help in that regard, but ultimately it’s Brad Keller, Carlos Hernández, Brady Singer and Co. who must evolve into consistent starters.

The offense should benefit not just from the arrival of Witt, but also an expected bounce-back from third baseman Hunter Dozier and eventual promotions of catcher MJ Melendez and first baseman Nick Pratto. The bullpen, anchored by Scott Barlow and bolstered by the addition of Amir Garrett, could be potentially dominant in the late innings.

Marlins
Projected wins by FanGraphs: 83

A Marlins official, asked Sunday what it will take for the team to break out, replied, “a quality center fielder and a closer.” A few hours later, the Marlins traded for Orioles relievers Cole Sulser and Tanner Scott, neither of whom qualifies as an ideal closer, though the payroll-slashing Orioles had planned to use Sulser in that role.

The Athletics’ Ramón Laureano, a potentially strong fit in center, will miss the first 27 games while completing his 80-game suspension for testing positive for an anabolic steroid. At the moment, the A’s seem inclined to hold him, leaving the Marlins with Jesus Sánchez playing center for the first time since 2019, when he was in Triple A.

The 83-win projection for the Marlins seems high, considering they play in the same division as the Braves, Mets and Phillies. The offense should be better with the additions of Avisaíl García and Jorge Soler. But the rotation, headed by Sandy AlcantaraTrevor Rogers and Pablo López, is the biggest reason to believe.

Cheating, 2022 edition

Imagine! Some pitchers resumed using sticky stuff in the latter part of last season, prompting the league to issue a memo to clubs last month detailing an additional crackdown on the illegal substances. Umpires in spring training began inspecting pitchers’ hands while conducting random between-innings inspections. The umps will continue that less invasive practice during the season while also reserving the right to examine a pitcher’s hat, belt and glove.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed concern that the checking of hands can be “a little arbitrary from umpire to umpire.” Reasonable point, but the fear of arbitrary judgments only exists because A) clubs are slavishly devoted to spin rates, which are enhanced by sticky stuff, and B) pitchers are hellbent on increasing their spin rates, knowing clubs value them so highly.

On a brighter note, sign stealing as we know it soon might come to an end. The league experimented this spring with a PitchCom, a communication system in which catchers send signs to pitchers through transmitters attached to their wrists. Pitchers wear receivers in the bands of their caps, and up to three other defenders also can use receivers during games.

The system will be used at the Double-A level this season. Major-league teams, if they grow comfortable with the technology, also will be permitted to try the devices. Players generally like the system, believing it will eliminate any chance of illegal sign-stealing while also enhancing the pace of play.

No sticky stuff? No sign stealing? You know what that means. Players and teams will just need to find new ways to cheat.

Happy Opening Day, everyone!
