Henrik Lundqvist announces retirement after legendary career

The King’s speech began just after 3 p.m. on Friday at Scandinavium Arena in Gothenburg, Sweden, or a little after 9 a.m. in New York.

“It’s the place where I watched my first real hockey game when I was 6 years old,” Henrik Lundqvist had told The Post before he made the trip to the rink. “That’s where I really started to watch hockey. That’s when my dream began that one day I would play there for Frolunda.”

That is where it began and that, on Friday, is where Lundqvist’s hockey career officially came to an end, the netminder romantically bookending it with the announcement that he is retiring at age 39 because of heart inflammation after 15 NHL seasons with the Rangers that followed four in the Swedish Elite League, as it was known then, with Frolunda.

“When [this] summer started, my plan was still to come back,” said Lundqvist, who signed with the Capitals in October of 2020 but did not play a game for them before undergoing open-heart surgery in early January. “I started working out again and was skating, but without any contact. But there were some setbacks. Too much exertion caused some chest pain.

“I was hoping I would be 100 percent by this time. But I was told that inflammation takes a long time to correct and with medication I might be out of the woods, but it could be another full year before I would be 100 percent.

“So I thought about this, talked with my closest friends, my family and my wife, Therese. This year was probably harder for her than for me. She is such a strong woman. It came down to how badly I wanted to push it, how much of a gamble did I want to take? And I came to the conclusion that there are too many unknowns and too much risk for not enough reward for me to keep playing.

“I’m OK with this. I am. I feel like I’m at a very strong place mentally after going through all of the challenges of the last year, starting with when the Rangers bought me out,” said No. 30. “For the last eight months or so, there has been so much waiting-and-seeing, and I have not been in the driver’s seat. I’ve been in the passenger’s seat. Now there was a decision to make.

“It’s all still fresh. I decided only a few days ago. But I am at peace. I look back at my career, and all I have is gratitude and pride. I am just so grateful.”

To recap: Lundqvist and the Rangers were aware that the goaltender had a heart condition that required monitoring following the Swede’s first medical upon joining the organization in 2005. The condition, checked regularly, never reached the point where Lundqvist required medical attention throughout his Broadway run.

But after he was bought out in September of 2020 and thereafter signed a one-year free agent deal with Washington, Lundqvist required open-heart surgery after an enlarged aorta and leaky valve had been discovered during a pre-camp exam.

Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic on Jan. 8 in which Lundqvist received an aortic valve replacement, an aortic root and an ascending aortic replacement, was successful to the degree that the goaltender had gotten back onto the ice in late February and was taking shots while planning to join the Caps for the final weeks of the season and the playoffs.

But Lundqvist was shut down in early April after inflammation was discovered. Then came summer hope before medical reality intruded and put a premature end to one of the great goaltending careers in NHL history and one of the most legendary careers in Rangers history.

“When I look back, there’s so much that goes into winning,” said the goaltender who retires as the sixth-winningest netminder in NHL history at 459-310-96 with a 2.43 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and 64 shutouts. In the postseason, he added another 61 wins and 10 shutouts and led the Rangers to the Stanley Cup finals in 2014. “Of course it is disappointing not to win the Cup, but we had our chances and we had our window. I am grateful for my teammates and to have played for those teams.

“There was nothing like the feeling of those big wins at the Garden, those Game 7s with everything on the line, the noise, and the way the building would explode after a victory. There was nothing like that feeling.”

Lundqvist played in eight Game 7s, going 6-2 with a 1.11 GAA and .961 save percentage, never allowing more than two goals in any of those showdown matches. He and the Rangers went an astonishing 15-4 in elimination games from 2012 through 2015. But no Cup.

“Loyalty was so important to me throughout my career,” Lundqvist said. “I feel like I left everything I had on the ice in New York. That feels good. When I made the decision to stay for the rebuild, loyalty was the most important thing to me. We didn’t win, but I did right by me. Staying meant so much to me.”

When the buyout came, Lundqvist ultimately decided to continue his career elsewhere — specifically with the Caps —after much thought and self-examination. But as he told The Post, “My heart wouldn’t let me.”

The Lundqvists are returning to New York shortly as their two daughters, 9-year-old Juli and 6-year-old Charlise, start the school year. This is home.

“It feels almost like normal,” said the King, who will turn 40 next March 2. “And now I’m going to start living a normal life, so to speak, in New York. I’m excited for the next chapter.”

The next chapter may or may not be hockey-related. “I have a few ideas, both inside and outside of hockey,” he said. “I love the game and always will, so when it’s time, I’ll see if there might be something where I can be involved with that.”

But this does not mean Lundqvist will immediately rejoin the Rangers organization that will surely host a retirement celebration at the Garden for No. 30 this season or next.

“I know I am going to reconnect with Jim at some point,” Lundqvist said of executive chairman and CEO Jim Dolan. “If I’m involved at some point with the Rangers, it would be beautiful in my mind. But I don’t know if now is the time.

“I can say this, though. I’m feeling good, I’m feeling grateful. Never once have I asked, ‘Why me?’ There have been so many challenges for all of us in the last year. I’m looking forward to the next part of my life.

“I’m looking forward to being in New York. It has such a big piece of my heart.”

igra sama mi je v bistvu prav zanimiva in privlačna. težavo imam le v tistem delu, ki jo imajo, kakor vidim/berem, v glavnem vsi; preveč se vleče vse skupaj.

 

sem bil pa prijetno presenečen, kako hitro sem pokapiral (malo več kot) osnove baseballa. ko bom imel v kratkem več časa, si bom (nalašč) pogledal še kakšno tekmo.

 

kdo recimo igra lep/zanimiv baseball v tem trenutku, če si navijaško popolnoma neobremenjen?

Če si že za Jetse, potem moraš biti tudi za Metse.  

 

Ne, pač odvisno od tega, kaj ti je zanimivo. Težko je v baseballu reči, kdo igra "lepo". Ekipe so večinoma izenačene in vsak lahko na vsak dan premaga vsakega, tudi če je ena ekipa na papirju veliko boljša od druge, kar tudi daje čar športu imo. Ena tekma med istima nasprotnikoma se lahko konča z rezultatom 10-9, drugi dan pa je 1-0 ali 2-1. Nikoli ne veš, kaj pričakovat. Enkrat sem nekje zasledil rek, da v sezoni s 162 tekmami vsaka ekipa zmaga 60 tekem in jih 60 izgubi, potem je pa usoda njihove sezone odvisna od tega, kaj naredijo na preostalih 40 tekmah.

 

Če bi sam zdaj začel spremljat, bi me verjetno pritegnili Blue Jaysi s svojim lineupom. Na drugi strani, če ti je ok pitching recimo Giantsi letos, ki jih je večina pričakovala bolj pri dnu, pa se še kar držijo na vrhu divizije z big spending LAD in SD. 

 

Potem pa seveda vse "velike" ekipe s stacked rosterji, že omenjeni Dodgersi in Padresi, BoSoxi, Astrosi, Yankeesi,... ter na drugi strani recimo Raysi in A''si, ki se jim skušajo zoperstaviti s svojim money ballom.

@ronaldinho; ali mi lahko lepo prosim na kratko obrazlozis razliko med Metsi in Yankeesi? 

 

ker malo spremljam te njujorsko medijsko izpostavljene karikature in nekako ne morem razdelat navijaske baze po krajih od koder prihajajo, starosti, ipd... nobene prave locnice oziroma niti med njimi ne najdem. 

 

kateri klub je zgodovinsko res renomiran, ljudje tam zivijo za baseball, klub pa ze dolgo ni nic osvojil? nekaj takega bi mi ustrezalo. kot recimo Maple Leafsi v NHLu (Shadow se ze kriza ). 

 

katero amerisko mesto mislis da je najbolj obsedeno z baseballom?

 

@Shadow; to je Kopi moral rect, sicer bi si zapravil prijateljstva s hollywoodskimi zvezdami, ker imajo po vecini vsi sezonske karte.

Med NYY in NYM ni ravno nekega dolgoletnega rivalstva, ker šele dobrih 20 let, odkar je MLB uvedla interleague tekme med NL in AL redno igrajo vsako leto. No, so se pa srečali v WS 2000, ko so Yankeeji slavili. Kot verjetno veš, so največji rivali NYY seveda Red Soxi, za Metse pa predvsem divizijski nasprotniki Bravesi in Philliesi.

 

Ni ravno nekega dokaza za to, načeloma pa sem zasledil, da navijači Jetsov večinoma podpirajo Metse, fani Giantsov pa Yankeeje (še nekoliko bolj razširjeno za ostale športe velja Yankees/Giants/Rangers/Knicks vs. Mets/Jets/Nets/Islanders ali Devils). Verjetno zato, ker imata zadnji franšizi daljšo in bogatejšo zgodovino. Zgodovinsko gledano sta v mestu rivalski ekipi NYY bili Brooklyn Dodgersi in New York Giantsi, ampak so v 50. letih bili oboji relocirani v Kalifornijo (sedanji LA Dodgers in SF Giants), tako da so za nekaj časa ostali samo Yankeeji. Metsi so v na novo ustanovljeni ekipi "pobrali" fane nekdanje ekipe Giantsov, ki se je odselila, tudi "posvojili" njihovo oranžno barvo kot primarno namesto modre barve Dodgersov.

 

Glede drugega vprašanja bi sigurno rekel Cubsi, če ne bi pred nekaj leti osvojili WS, na katerega so čakali več kot stoletje. Zdaj je to težje. Cleveland Indians (od naslednje sezone Guardians) imajo dolgo zgodovino in že več kot 70 let čakajo na naslov. Bi jim privoščil, tako kot Brownsom v NFL, ampak vprašanje, če jim bo kdaj uspelo.  Rangersi 6 desetletij (pred desetimi leti so bili dvakrat zapored v WS, od takrat imeli še nekajkrat solidno ekipo, trenutno pa rebuildajo), Brewersi pa pol stoletja čakajo na svoj prvi WS. Fani Brewersov so bili pred začetkom letošnje sezone tudi izbrani za najboljše v ligi v anketi Fox Sportsa, tako da je mogoče to to, kar iščeš.  Ekipa je solidna, edini "problem" trenutno je to, da NL Central ni preveč kompetitivna divizija (Pirati so v rebuildu, Cubsi so pred trade deadlineom razpadli in po njem, ko so vse strejdali še bolj, Cardsi tudi underperformajo, edini Redsi so zadnje čase v solidni formi) in potem tudi vprašanje, kaj lahko naredijo v postseasonu, predvsem proti NL West ekipam.

 

(aja, čisto BTW, ko že Cubse in Redse omenjam, naslednje leto bodo oni igrali na Fields of Dreams game)

 

Potem imaš še Padrese, ki so trenutno zaradi agresivnosti svojega GM pri grajenju ekipe smatrani kot "velika" ekipa in med favoriti, čeprav še niso dobili WS in so lani v skrajšani sezoni videli playoff prvič po 14 letih, so pa v bližnji prihodnosti med vsemi temi ekipami verjetno najbližje temu, da gredo do konca, čeprav se nikoli ne ve, ker pač morajo preko Dodgersov (in letos še presenetljivo dobrih Giantsov) za to. 

 

In nenazadnje moji M'si, ki so zdaj edina ekipa, ki še ni nastopala v WS, odkar so jo Natsi osvojili pred dvema letoma in tudi ekipa v vseh profi ligah, ki je najdlje brez postseasona (nazadnje smo bili v playoffu 2001, ko smo dosegli 116 zmag, kar je še vedno MLB rekord in bo najbrž še kar nekaj časa ). Ampak imamo svetlo prihodnost - najboljši farm sistem v MLB po zadnjih rankingih po tem, ko smo pred začetkom rebuilda 2019 bili gladko zadnji! -  tako da veš, koga ti bi predlagal.  

 

Za zadnje pa težko reči, verjetno fani in predvsem mediji v kakšni od metropol (LA, NY, BOS), kjer se skoraj iz vsakega poraza njihovih ekip dela paniko, kar ti je verjetno tudi poznano iz drugih športov.

Chicken Wolf of the Louisville Colonels hit a deep drive and Powell took off after it, joined by a dog that had been sleeping by the fence.

enkrat sem zasledil podatek, da so konec sedemdesetih oziroma v začetku osemdesetih v ligi resno razmišljali, da enostavno 'prepovejo' tekme med WS in Yankeeji,- ker so bile konstantno navijaške pizdarije. baje so v dveh zaporednih sezonah v omenjenem obdobju sodili osmim navijačem Yankeejev za posamezne poizkuse uboja pristašev beloštunfnežev.
